Faculty of Agriculture of Universitas Hasanuddin Persuade Urban Community to Increase Food Security

The Faculty of Agriculture of Universitas Hasanuddin organized Village Development Program. The activity with the theme "House yard Intensification through Family-Based Healthy Vegetable Development as an Effort to Fulfill Food Needs in the Covid-19 Period" was addressed to the community in Tamalate District.

The focus of the activity was to distributing packages of staples and seeds of vegetable and fruit such as 98 chili seeds, 30 water spinach seeds, 30 okra seeds, 10 durian and rambutan seeds. Chili seeds and water spinach are the work of agricultural students, while okra and durian seeds are aids from the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Hasanuddin.

The packages of nine-basic-necessities and seeds were then handed over to the people in Tamalate District on Tuesday (12/05).

The Faculty of Agriculture of Unhas distributed aid in Tamalate District, because this area has been determined as the Covid-19 red zones. This condition certainly limits community activities including their access to daily needs, especially food.

In this conditions, it is necessary to have the ability of the community to independently provide their own foodstuffs such as vegetables and fruit.

The house yard intensification for the development of family-based healthy vegetables can be used as a solution to overcome this problem. In urban areas, gardening can be done in the yard of the house with the use of verticultural technology and polybags.

Through this activity, the urban community is expected to be able to improve the food security during the difficult time like the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, this program is also expected to be able to relieve boredom while staying at home or #DiRumahSaja.

The Village Development Program of Faculty of Agriculture was officially opened by Prof. Dr. drg. A. Arsunan Arsin, M. Kes ( Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni). The opening was also attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Unhas (Prof. Dr. sc. Agr. Baharuddin) along with the leaders, lecturers, and students involved in the activities.
